Most of us teach because we love teaching and we love our students. We know that the most effective teaching happens when we have student-centered classrooms that address the needs of the whole child. This workshop moves from sentiment to action using student performance data to get you, your students, and your administrators focused on student performance. Using the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP), one of the NJ DOE-approved world languages assessments, this workshop will introduce practical tools for gathering data on your students and how to use that data to motivate students, advocate for your program, and modify your supervising/teaching from a base of empirical information.

Teaching is overwhelming. It is easy to feel adrift in a sea of demands from students, administrators, and parents. Sometimes it is hard to know if you are doing the right thing or even what the right thing is. Like mariners, teachers need a North Star to keep them focused on student performance. Using data derived from administrations of the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP), this workshop will show you how to adjust your teaching and curriculum to maximize student performance. Step one is to determine exactly where your students are now. Step two is to become a reflective professional and use student performance data to inform better teaching.

Even skilled biographers fail to capture the whole person. Autobiographies are often self-delusional despite Detective Joe Friday's best efforts; we all want more than "just the facts, Ma'am." Putting all of these viewpoints together, however, gives us a pretty good picture of a person. This workshop will show a comprehensive assessment and evaluation system that blends teacher judgments, student self-evaluation, and external test scores to paint a fair and comprehensive picture of a student's language learning career. Participants will go home with ideas and materials for gathering and organizing this information, as well as strategies for using this information for advocacy and professional growth.
