Rater Training Access

It is important to understand the scoring criteria used to evaluate the student writing and speaking samples. This page allows access to two powerful tools that will help to increase understanding of these standards and scoring criteria.

Phase 1: Tutorial
By following the link to the tutorial, users will be able to receive online training support, outlining how items are scored and will allow the user to view annotated samples to help define the evaluation process and standard. This tutorial contains about 25 annotated items in each language to help establish the standard and process for rating items. Users can reenter this site and complete the training bank as many times as they like.
Step 1: Download this document and read about the scoring process and criteria.
Step 2: Log into the tutorial tool and complete the practice bank. Go back to the scoring criteria document as you have questions about the scoring. There are links in the Valid tool to this information, so you can access the information from within the tool or from the downloaded document.

Phase 2: Certification
Once a user has completed the tutorial section and they would like to become a certified rater for LLS. They must complete the certification process. This process involves completing a bank of 100 items and in order to reach certification, each rater must attain a 90% agreement with our mater raters on these items. This process is necessary to establish the initial inter-rater reliability standard required of all LLS certified raters. This process will take about 3 hours to complete per skill.

If you are interested in learning more about this, please click HERE to send an email to our grader coordinator.
